The Seattle SuperSonics are one step closer to wearing a new belt. Actually, three steps closer. Today, current owner Clay (causing Seattle some Aiken) Bennet convinced three other NBA owners that Oklahoma City should be the new home for the green and gold. It has been in the works for some time now, and should not be a surprise to anyone. The fans of Seattle put up a good fight, and several groups expressed interest in buying back ownership from Bennett. But with a terrible arena, a crummy record, and some good ol' Bible Belt lure, they will be leaving sooner than later.
Sad.
What am I saying!? I should be a Portland fan now anyway, right?. Sadly, since moving to Oregon, I have not gotten on the trail blazing bandwagon. Over the last few years, I haven't even been following the Sonics in the first place, but do have some fond memories. I'll always remember the 95-96 season and listening to the finals against Jordan. Kemp and Payton were a classic duo.
Durant and Green sure look like viable future builders, but alas, the question I pose is what to name the new Sonics as they move 2,000 miles away. They will not keep SuperSonics because it was all about Boeing in the first place. Bennett has also stated that he would not seek to keep the name, and would allow any future NBA teams in Seattle to use the name again. How nice.
Courtesy of the wiki gods, I found out Oklahoma's state bird is the Scissortail flycatcher. How about Oklahoma Scissortails! woot woot! They could even choose their state mammal, and be the Oklahoma Bisons. If animals don't work, they could be the first team named after a food! If anything, Oklahoma sure sounds like a yummy place to live with the official state meal being:
fried okra, squash, cornbread, barbecue pork, biscuits, sausage and gravy, grits, corn, strawberries, chicken fried steak, pecan pie, and black-eyed peas.
Wow, I never thought I would be blogging about basketball, but as a fan of Seattle's sports teams, it will be strange. I leave you all with a video of Chris Ballew, from The Presidents of the United States of America singing a tribute to the Sonic's mascot, Squatch. They also did a song called Supersonics, that i will for sure be listening to come the big move.
